We specialise in horizontal brass sundials in both traditional and contemporary styles,
and we make to commission only. This particular dial has been made for Bristol but
you can have a dial made for any place you wish, and the dial will be accurate for the
specific latitude and longitude of that location. Within the design you can have your
own motto and dedication, and include dates or anniversaries. All this is included in
the price of the sundial. We are able to produce very fine detail through acid etching and the baseplates are made from high quality solid brass. The gnomon is unique for each dial and is cut out from plate brass and accurately profiled to the required latitude. The size and shape of the baseplate can be altered to whatever you wish. This particular sundial has a diameter of 225mm and has been given a patinated finish ( an option available for a small extra cost ). Bright or matt finishes are also available as are thicker baseplates. If you wish to enquire about ordering a sundial like this one then please phone or e-mail us and we can talk through your requirements. of David Brown Sundials.
The shadow of the tip of the gnomon shows solar time from 6am to 6pm. The hours are marked in black with a gilt cross for noon. Blue winter solstice, green equinox and red summer solstice date lines carry the corresponding zodiac signs, and the shadow of the tip of the gnomon moves along these lines on the respective dates (December 21, March / September 21, and June 21 ). If correctly positioned, this sundial will work anywhere in England.
This sundial is designed in the style of one of the earliest known sundials, invented by an astronomer-priest named Berosus near the ancient city of Babylon in the 3rd Century BC and later found throughout Greece and the Roman Empire. Materials: Bath Stone from the Monks Park Quarry. Gnomon: gilt brass. PRICE COMPLETE WITH PLINTH - £950 ( available end of July ) |

CELESTE DIAL
This brass armillary sphere, 450mm in diameter, is a strikingly simple interpretation of a design originally conceived by the astronomer Ptolemy in 250AD. The sphere comprises a series of rings each representing one of the heavenly bodies. The shadow is cast on to the hour band by the gnomon which runs through the centre of the dial and points to the celestial pole. The dial, has been made from high quality brass and is intrinsically very strong as borne out by its weight of 6.5 kilos. The dial indicates Greenwich Mean Time from 6 am to 6pm and the hours are engraved in Roman numerals with the half-hour and quarter hour also marked. Engraved on the dial is a Shakespearean quotation 'Thou by the dial's shady stealth mayst know time's thievish progress to eternity'. Celeste Dial £590 inc. VAT. |

CRESCENT DIAL
The crescent dial has been made to a very high specification using mirror polished stainless steel, which will continue to glint, glisten well into the next millennium. The dial comprises an elegant crescent which holds the hour band. It is set on to a stainless steel plate 215mm in diameter. Time is indicated by the shadow on the hour band, which is cast by the gnomon rod running through the centre of the dial. The hour band is engraved with Roman numerals from 6am to 6pm and hour and half-hour lines. Also engraved on the hour band is 'Hora Quasi Umbra' meaning ''Time is but a shadow'. Crescent Dial £490 inc VAT |
